We do everything from creating original artwork using both traditional and digital techniques to building custom mascot-styled costumes and fursuits. Let us build the costume you've been dreaming of! If you don't have a character design to provide us for reference for costume work, we can create the design for you! We offer design services as well as costume services and we'd like to help you in any way we can on your way to getting your mascot the way you've always imagined it. Who are we anyway?

Black Back Studio was founded in early 2007 by Crystal, an aspiring graphic designer and artist. She is the backbone of BBS, designing and creating all of the costumes and artwork featured in the gallery, and she is also the "webmistress" of BlackBackStudio.com. It has been a long time dream to start her very own business, and Black Back Studio is definitely on its way to fulfilling that dream.

Crystal has been creative "ever since she could pick up a pencil." From her early years to the present, she has always had an eye for art and design. She took very few art classes growing up, but managed to be voted "Most Artistic" by her peers in her senior year of high school. She originally wanted to become a psychology major, but her artistic roots called her back to design. In July of 2007, Crystal graduated from Brooks College in Sunnyvale, California with an Associate's Degree in Graphic Design.

During her studies at Brooks, in late 2005, a friend introduced her to the "Furry Fandom." She attended a convention called Further Confusion, which is, conveniently for her, located in San Jose, California year after year. She was soon sumberged in the mascotting world and so began her interest in building the costumes. Her very first costume, a black-backed jackal named Ember, debuted at Califur, a southern California furry convention, in May 2006. Experiencing the thrill of bringing a character to life has inspired and continually motivates Crystal to create mascots for others to enjoy.

She currently resides in San Jose, California with her fiance and [unofficial] business partner, Christopher. He has been her support both personally and professionally ever since they met in late 2006. Black Back Studio wouldn't be possible without this partnership.
